Rio Hondo tops St. Joseph in first scrimmage
RIO HONDO — While the regular season might not start for two more weeks, the boys in black look well on their way on Friday night. Spurred by a consistent offense and an aggressive, attacking defense, Rio Hondo had little trouble with a young Brownsville St. Joseph team as the Bobcats rolled at home in the first scrimmage for both teams. The squads began with a 20/20, 15/15 controlled format. During that period, Rio Hondo scored four times total to St. Joseph’s two. After a short break, two live quarters were played and the ‘Cats again prevailed, 23-7.
All in all, a strong night for Rocky James’ squad.
“The intensity was really good. I thought from the opening 20/20 our defense played really tough and they’re gonna be the strength of this team,” said James, now in his seventh year as head coach. “It was nice to see after last year not having a sound defense. They (St. Joseph) have a really good offensive team so there were different things to work on.”
