Rio Hondo opens season with impressive win over the Warrriors!

By MARK MOLINA | Valley Morning Star

RIO HONDO — From the start things didn’t look too bright for the Santa Rosa Warriors as they saw running back Wally Olivarez get helped off the field on the sixth play with an ankle injury.

Olivarez would not return and the flood gates opened.

The Warriors fought to stay a float for most of the first half, but turnovers turned the momentum one way, allowing the Rio Hondo Bobcats to blow the game open with the help of three touchdowns by running Alan Alfaro en route to a 35-0 victory Friday night at Bobcat Stadium.

As Rio Hondo coach Rocky James expected, the Warriors (0-1) came out aggressive running the ball, but the Bobcat’s (1-0) defense forced the short-handed Santa Rosa squad into errors.

”I knew they were going to come out with a lot of formations and a big line,” James said. “Santa Rosa did a great job even though they lost their stud early. I knew they’d struggle without him because that kid Wally [Olivarez] is a real good football player. However, I knew we should come out and play great on defense.”

According to Warrior coach Arturo Garcia there was no official word yet on the type of injury Olivarez suffered or if it’ll keep his feature back out longer than just the end of Friday’s game.

“I don’t if it was a re aggravated high ankle sprain. I don’t know, but it hurt enough to where he [Olivarez] couldn’t go,” Garcia. “If he’s not 100 percent it isn’t fair to the kid to play him—we’ll take it day by day.”

The Warriors had just 85 yards total offense and struggled to move the ball throughout the night following Olivarez’s exit, but Garcia is pleased with his team’s effort.

“They (Rio Hondo) are a very good ball club. I think they should’ve beat us tonight but not as bad as the score says,” “When your leader goes down people start looking around, checking to see who’s going to pick us up, but I was proud of our kids. I think we played well in the first half but you can’t take anything away from Rio Hondo.

The Warriors also had problems taking advantage of Rio Hondo turnovers that included a turnover on downs and a Marco Garate fumble.

The Bobcats would take the momentum for good in the late second quarter that started with a 43-yard touchdown screen pass from Bobcat quarterback Elijah Pitonez to Garate for a 7-0 lead.

The Warriors would continue to stumble as sophomore quarterback Leo Lara, who took the reins under center after starter A.J. Mendiola moved over to the running back position, fumbled the ball with under a minute to go on a keeper play and watched Rio Hondo linebacker Marc Carrizales return it 36 yards, making it 14-0 at the break.

“The turnover got our momentum going and we came out the second half and kept on moving,” James said. “We have some work to do, but it’s nice to get a win over a quality team.

Alfaro would shut the door on the Warriors following the break, as he scored on runs of one, five and 33 yards to put the Warriors away.

Alfaro finished the night with 84 yards on eight carries all coming in the second half.

“I feel Santa Rosa came out ready to play. They’re a good team that is going to get better,” Alfaro said. “Our o-line picked it up in the second half and I picked up the ball and tried my best to move the chains. I feel like we’re getting better day by day.”

RIO HONDO – One team was consistent on offense, tenacious on defense and possessed a genuine swagger.

The other, not so much.
In what was a terrific first dress rehearsal, Rio Hondo for the most part dominated a youthful Brownsville St. Joseph team as the Bobcats cruised over the Bloodhounds on Friday night at Bobcat Stadium.
The squads began with a controlled portion of 20 plays each with the starters followed by 15 plays with the second-stringers. In its 35 plays, Rio Hondo scored four touchdowns to St. Joe’s two. After a brief intermission, two live 12-minute quarters were played and the ’Cats again won handily, 23-7.
Head coach Rocky James, now in his seventh season, was happy with what he saw, especially defensively.
“The intensity was really good. I thought from the opening 20/20 our defense played really tough and they’re gonna be the strength of this team,” said James, now in his seventh year as head coach. “It was nice to see after last year not having a sound defense. They (St. Joseph) have a really good offensive team so there were different things to work on.”
From the word go, Rio Hondo senior quarterback Eli Pitones guided the offense more than adequately while the offensive line had good push up front to buoy a strong ground attack. Marco Garate (six-yard run) and Pitones (seven-yard run) accounted for the scoring on the opening series for the Bobcats, who will now compete in District 16-4A Division-II.
St. Joseph, which competes in TAPPS and is looking to replace several stars from a year ago, started off moving backward thanks to a relentless Bobcat rush. But the Bloodhounds finished strong as Kai Money found Jorge De La Garza on a nice 15-yard scoring pass to cap their first series.
On the second set of plays with a mix of 2s and 3s, Rio Hondo’s Roel Benitez, a converted linebacker, was the man early and often keyed by a 50-yard run on the first play from scrimmage and following that up with a 10-yard TD two plays later. Later, Andy Vasquez also scored on the possession for the Cats as the offense was clicking.
During its 15-play series, St. Joseph struck through the air again as Money connected with wide-open Sean Cantu on a 40-yard hookup to round out the scoring.
In the live portion, Rio Hondo’s defense made an early statement. With the Bloodhounds backed up inside their own 5-yard line, Money was sacked in the end zone for a safety and 2-0 Bobcat lead.
On the ensuing drive, Alan Alfaro found paydirt on a one-yard plunge. Later, Pitones tacked on a 20-yard scoring run and then was on the receiving end of a 38-yard TD from Josh Gonzalez.
Meanwhile, St. Joseph finally got on the board with a couple of minutes left when Dave Lapeyre snagged a six-yard strike.
Overall, James said several questions were answered, especially on offense, but there is still plenty of work to do.
“We got to see the offense do well,” he said. “We didn’t know how well we were gonna do offensively since they go against a really good defense every single day. The offense really stepped up big. Eli played very well and our receivers caught the ball well. The o-line, which was a question, did a great job. So we’re really happy with the whole thing.”
Rio Hondo will round out its scrimmage schedule at Valley View next Friday at 6:30 p.m

RIO HONDO — While the regular season might not start for two more weeks, the boys in black look well on their way on Friday night. Spurred by a consistent offense and an aggressive, attacking defense, Rio Hondo had little trouble with a young Brownsville St. Joseph team as the Bobcats rolled at home in the first scrimmage for both teams. The squads began with a 20/20, 15/15 controlled format. During that period, Rio Hondo scored four times total to St. Joseph’s two. After a short break, two live quarters were played and the ‘Cats again prevailed, 23-7.

All in all, a strong night for Rocky James’ squad.

“The intensity was really good. I thought from the opening 20/20 our defense played really tough and they’re gonna be the strength of this team,” said James, now in his seventh year as head coach. “It was nice to see after last year not having a sound defense.
